Registration is still open. Hey peeps.. The countdown for Brunei Cyber Games III is almost over. Tomorrow evening most games will commenced such as Pro Evo Soccer 2009 and surprisingly many still choose PS2 over PS3. Give it some time and PS3 games might just dominate in future BCG events. Winners of PS2 and PS3 category will get PS3 80Gig console and PS3 160Gig console respectively.

We still have slots for RockBand competition and the difficulty for the RockBand competition will be “medium” until the finale. The first round songs will be by Radiohead and Bon Jovi. The later songs will be announced during the tournament. The winner will get a new RockBand 2 set for PS3 platform.

Today’s registration will be at ETA Gameshop @ Cineplex from 1pm to 8pm. The last days of registration are on Thursday and Friday at the ICC and you can contact 819 7773 for more details.

EO changes concept of advertising. Remember the old days of the orange boxes located along the small street at Gadong? Well, now it has been replaced with black solid framed boxes using rollers (inside) rather than digital displays. It was more cost effective for easyOrange clients as they can enjoy huge adverts (1.8 m by 1m).

The new machines are called “EO Scrollers” and the responses have been encouraging. Volvo (Brunei) and Rizqun International Hotel are some of their clients. The “EO Scrollers” can also synchronise the advertisements across multiple billboards.

SPN 21 faces new challenges. If you guys have been reading the papers, SPN 21 is a new education system that has been recently introduced in schools. This is one of the missions of The Ministry of Education and to test Brunei’s education system if they are on par with global standards. The Programme International Student Assessment (Pisa) has been used as a benchmark in other countries and they have seen favourable results. It’s now only a matter of time before it will make an impact on the students in a long run.

However, some teachers have raised some concerns on SPN 21. Of course, nothing is perfect and everyone has his/her opinions on the introduction of SPN 21. But there are some valid points that need to be addressed. For instance, the lack of facilities may slow down the teaching process. An IT class might be introduced but what if there are lack of computer facilities. Another issue is that the teachers may not be qualified to teach certain subjects that they are not familiar with.

The SPN 21 is still new so it’s still early days to say. I’m sure the Ministry will look into this matter and fix bugs (if any) so it will benefit the students, the teachers and the parents. But I salute one thing that most government schools are currently doing and that is constructing track and field facilities. I don’t think that falls under the SPN 21 but nonetheless, these facilities are as important as the education system.

If you have your thoughts on SPN 21, do email me ranoadidas @gmail.com.

.Time’s ticking.

Chelsea’s supporters club?? First we had the Liverpool Supporters Club Brunei, then the Manchester Supporters Club and now Brunei Chelsea Fan Club (BCFC) will be making its name in Brunei and yes, they are looking for local Chelsea fans.. I know there are quite a few of them around and to mark their first event, BCFC will be hosting the mouth-watering clash between Chelsea and Manchester United on the 11th January. I should be there hopefully to cover the event.

Chelsea vs Manchester United *click to enter for details*

Oh yeah, the official BCFC venue will be at D’ Other Office Cafe & Bistro should there be more than 30 local supporters. Currently there are 18 registered members and Pg Metussin is one of the members too. For those who wants to register as a member, you can visit their website here or you can email them at brunei_chelsea@hotmail.com. For those who wants to RSVP for the match (Sunday, 11th Jan), you can contact Zahar 888 6236 and yes, it’s also open to all football fans.

Dream Charter. I’m sure some of you have read this from the local papers few weeks ago. Mr. Reeds has been on it and so did David Cheok. So I was invited by the local partner, Bohari, and it was such a perfect timing last Sunday as it wasn’t as hot as I thought it would be around 2ish pm.

So what’s the Dream Charter? Just refer to the pictures below and you’ll know what I mean. You can go day sailing or catch the Brunei sunset (50% discount on weekends) and even have fine dining on the boat. Or perhaps you can have your pre-wedding shots too..

I met the owner of the boat - Peter and his wife Aideen (both great lads) and this is their new business opportunity by providing an enjoyable service to our local community. The service has also being endorsed by Brunei Tourism and expect to hear more of the Dream Charter in weeks to come.

For more info, you can contact Bohari at 8722 347 or email him at bohariabd@yahoo.com.

Rano says celebrating a new year will make one feel older so I’ll just pretend it’s still the same old, same old. My FB has been flooded like nobody’s business and I thank you for that. Keep them coming and no need to SMS *lol* Now my mind is focused on the upcoming Brunei Cyber Games III. I don’t expect it to be as big because it’s the beginning of the school season. But let’s just hope that the 3rd Consumer Fair 2009 will be a big hit and who knows you might be a winner of the Toyota VIOS. That could be a crowd puller indeed.

Anyway, thanks AJ for the lens. I finally owned a wide angle lens and I have yet to try it on my 50D. But should I invest in the 5D II, then the Sigma wide angle lens will be unusable. Then again, the 5D II is just a hefty investment. I’ve tried my friend’s 5D II and wow!!! the camera is a gem and surely one of my dream lists. I even tested the video capabilities and it’s gorgeous coming from a SLR camera.

So what’s your resolution for this year? Well, Zunic Wellness has come up with an idea and that is start it with G-10 where you can form a group of ten friends with a special rate of $150 each for 3 months (unlimited workout). Cool huh? For more info, you can call Zunic Wellness at 222 1768

Tamimi - new favourite for PES? He claimed the top scorer award back in the Baiduri Expo Cyber Games and now he went a step further by beating the likes of Fadly Shah in the Pro Evo Soccer 2009 mini tournament organised by Liverpool Supporters Club Brunei. The final score line was 3-1 in favour of Tamimi and all the semi-finalists of the mini tournament get a free entry to the upcoming Brunei Cyber Games III.

Fadly Shah vs Ak Yus

Favourites Ak Yus was outsed by Fadly Shah in the quarter-finals and denied the “legend killer” a free spot at BCG III. Syazwi was one of the top scorers as he won 8-1 during the quarter finals of the match if I’m not mistaken. Bobo didn’t make it to the quarters so that means you have to register for BCG III *lol*

Edmund, the president of LSCB, presented the prizes to the top three winners. Congrats to all the top four players and I shall see you this weekend :) And well done to the committee of the PES 2009 tourney. We should have more games like this :)

Tamimi - 1st place

Fadly Shah - 2nd place

Syazwi - 3rd place

HRH Princess Sarah at Bukit Shahbandar. I didn’t know of this event after reading the papers this morning. Otherwise this would have been a good coverage. Anyway, HRH Paduka Seri Pengiran Anak Isteri Pengiran Anak Sarah participated in the Bukit Shahbandar Challenge in the Open Category D and she finished third in 42 minutes.

There were around 317 contestants that took place and the guest of honour was the Minister of Industry and Primary Resources, Pehin Yahya, who presented the prizes for all the categories. The event was organised by Persatuan Kilang-Kilang Papan Brunei and the Forestry Department.

A plus point for one of our national runner, Sefli Anak Ahar, was that he broke his own personal record by completing the 7km challenge in 45 minutes. His previous record was 47 minutes. As you may have heard, Sefli is one of the runners for Standard Chartered “Greatest Race on Earth”. His final leg will be in Hong Kong next month. Good luck to you, dude..

FIFA 2009 vs PES 2009. Before this wasn’t a great debate, back in the old PS2 days. Now it’s a different story.. FIFA 2009 has got what it takes to battle PES 2009 to the end. Why? Better graphics and gameplay (on par or better) after I’ve played a few games. I was never a big fan of FIFA 2009 and probably the majority of Bruneians are familiar with PES or Winning Eleven titles from the PS2 and PS3 users.

PES 2009 is still popular but FIFA has better gameplay

FIFA lovers will have a better argument that FIFA has better gameplay and realism as compared to PES 2009 and even critics of video gamers do share the same opinion. But because the popularity of PES users are high in Brunei, it does make sense that holding a competition for PES is a safe bet. However, in the near future, FIFA competition might just be included in the competition if demand is good.

So to FIFA lovers out there, don’t be disappointed. If there’s enough demand of competition, there’s a possibility for it to be included in the next BCG.

Rano says it’s back to school day today and yet my family is not back yet. They will be back this week :) But home has been pretty quiet for sometime already. I miss the noises of my siblings but I hope they are all in good health back in the UK. Maybe this year, I will try and plan to go to the UK but then again, I might be there in March for the Manchester vs Liverpool match *InsyaAllah* It’s not a done deal yet..

This week I will be busy preparing for the upcoming Brunei Cyber Games III and there have been lots of inquiring regarding PC Games. I know this may be last minute but there just might be a possibility of the competition but it’s still a 20/80 percent possibility. I just need to discuss with an interested party who might be able to assist us in this matter. Like I said before, the draw back is the rental of the PCs but I will update you guys on this matter by tonite or tomorrow.

Oh yeah, I suggest to my friends (on my MSN contact list) to change their passwords. Well, not all of you but apparently some of you have virus infected on ur MSN. So I keep getting all this spams and links even when you guys are offline. So the trick is to change your password but do tell me if my MSN does that to you guys.. I do wonder if some of you still chat on mIRC and ICQ *lol*

Rano says we have a new spammer in town!! Perhaps that’s one way of getting attention and even my fellow bloggers are getting it. I supposed it’s harmless but it can be annoying if it’s overdone. Am I right, Mr Reeds? *lol* News have been dry and even reporters are hunting for news.

Apparently, today’s the last day of school holidays and do expect to see different kinds of fashion especially from the teenagers if you know what I mean. I was thinking to myself that these guys could be the ideal people for the upcoming Rockband competition in the 3rd Brunei Cyber Games. I’ve got two bands signing up for the competition. Expect the numbers to increase before the deadline.

Today’s the fourth day of the new year and I’m still not 100% fit. I turned down a movie offer last night just to catch up some rest and my cough is almost gone but it can potentially come back since my medication has finished. My big day is coming up too but I haven’t planned anything just yet. Maybe just some dinner with my friends.

As for movies, I can’t wait to watch the Watchmen after looking at the trailers. I didn’t follow the comic so I don’t know what story line to expect from this movie. I heard “IP man” (pronounced as yip mund) is a good movie because of its fighting scenes. I have yet to catch Australia the movie but they only have limited screens showing.

Coming soon - Watchmen

Today, Liverpool Supporters Club Brunei (LSCB) will be having their first PES 2009 tournament for their members. I’m not sure what the format is but the top four players in both PS2 and PS3 category will get a FREE entry to the 3rd Brunei Cyber Games. So good luck to all the participants. I shall be dropping by later too.

Milin launched his new album. Just a day after Dayat was crowned the champion of P2F season 2, Milin reached a new milestone as he launched his debut album entitled “Milin”. The ceremony took place at CheezBox Cafe and the ceremony was officiated by Hans Anuar and Joe M of Phuture Phase Productions.

The album has ten tracks with a pop contemporary genre. In attendance were the contestants from P2F Season 2 and also Zul F, the winner of the first season. Recently, they have been a few album releases from Putri Norizah, MNC as well as Rentak 914. This is a sign that the local music industry is growing and with the right formula, this industry can tick off on the right path.

ps. I believe most of them are not full time singers (to answer one of the taggers). I’m sure they have their own jobs to begin with and I know some of them are working too. The music scene is just one way to express their talents and passion. I’m sure some local singers do earn thru private functions as well.

Bruplay, more than just gaming. Formerly known as Brugamer, this association has been around for quite some time and now they have renamed themselves as Bruplay (forum on next generation consoles) and they have a Bruplay blogspot which has updates on the latest games on PS3 and Xbox 360.

Bruplay will be involved in the upcoming 3rd Brunei Cyber Games 2009 and they will assist in RockBand and Call of Duty 4. Both these games will make their debut in BCG after much delay and hopefully, the tournament will bring in new trends of games. The game industry is one of the biggest in terms of revenue and 2009 will be no different. Do look out for Bruplay to play a bigger role in upcoming BCG events and they are here to make a difference in our local gaming industry.

Football to have a new body soon. The Protem Committee of Football Federation of Brunei Darussalam (FFBD) is pleased to invite all representatives of football associations and clubs in Brunei Darussalam to attend a meeting on 14th January 2009, at 8 p.m. at Lecture Theatre, Stadium Negara Hassanal Bolkiah, Berakas. The purpose of the said meeting is to hold the First General Meeting to elect the administrative council members of the newly established federation.

FFBD was set up by football fans in this country following the deregistration of Brunei Darussalam Football Association (BAFA). The aim of this federation is to ensure that football will continuously be supported and developed at the national, regional and international level. This federation is also known as Persekutuan Bolasepak Negara Brunei Darussalam.

All football associations and clubs are welcome to become members before 14th January 2009 to enable the election of members of the administrative council on the said date. We wish to stress that the success of this federation is contingent on the support of football fans in this country.

FFBD has made applications to become a member of FIFA and AFC as soon as the federation was registered with the Registrar of Societies Brunei Darussalam on 18th December 2008. FFBD has already been recognised by the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports. It is to be reiterated that the support of all football associations and football clubs in this country is very important. As a sport with the largest number of following, they are all responsible in supporting and developing football nationwide and bring this sport to regional and international level.

Movie of 2008. So what are the candidates for my top 5 movies of 2008? There are quite a few that came across my mind and there were some flicks that were simply overrated. I even missed some blockbuster movies such as 10,000 BC, Eagle Eye and High School Musical 3 (lol).

But I give it hands down to the Dark Knight for my top movie of 2008. Why? Because it has the most psychotic villain with a gripping story line and great action sequences. Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk don’t even come close to the class delivered by The Dark Knight. I do hope it gets a few nomination nods in the Oscars this year.

I love this guy

1) The Dark Knight
2) 21
3) Vicky Cristina Barcelona
4) Kungfu Panda
5) Dr. Seuss’ Horton Hears a Who!

Overrated, Overhyped and Over-berabis movies

1) Speed Racer (Simply colourblinded by the movie)
2) Indiana Jones (Alien ending, come on…)
3) Love Guru (What happened to your Mojo?)
4) Mummy 3 (Anything with Jet Li spoils the movie)
5) Hancock (You can do better than that, Smith..)

Why no PC games? Firstly, I would like to apologise on behalf of BCG committee that PC Games are not included in the tournament. My task is simple which is handling console competition because this is what I’m familiar with. The other task of PC games was given to one of the partners/committee of BCG because of his experience of running PC Games. So you can tell that this actually was part of the plan a few months back. Not because my partner wasn’t able to locate sponsors such as the rental of PCs and prizes for the PC Games, we weren’t able to fulfill the criteria. The supposed games that PC games will be offering are Counter Strike, DOTA and even Call of Duty. So it’s such a pity that the PC Games competition won’t be able to be included in the 3rd Brunei Cyber Games 2009.

We will look into this matter seriously for the next tournament. The only problem that is making this difficult is the PC units as well as sponsors and the previous tournament held was a major loss for the organisers due to lack of sponsors. So I hope PC gamers do understand the reason behind this. If any of you gamers help me source for PCs, then I can make one possible for you guys. At the moment, my hands are tied.

Bruneimotors.com has potential. With a few local blog sites on cars, it’s pretty safe to say that there are a few car enthusiasts that have the initiative to blog. I’ve brought this up before during the Blog it Up session and this new blogger who attended the session actually created one portal for cars which I believe has good potential with enough exposure and loyal readers.

The new car portal website *click to enter website*

At the moment, the leading unofficial car website is Carzine and it has been around for a year now. I’m sure all the car dealers and car fans are aware of Brunei Carzine and it already has make a name for itself. Now comes in Bruneimotors.com and it’s slightly different from Carzine. Just click on the link to see what I mean.

Anyway, this is very ideal for car dealers who wants to join the bandwagon in terms of advertisements. Perhaps Carzine and Bruneimotors can collaborate with RA to see the bigger picture in terms of getting exposure ;)

Missing Cambodia. Man, I do want to come back to Cambodia again if time permits. Not to shop but just relax and enjoy. If you do visit Cambodia, do stay at Phnom Penh or Siem Reap (six hours drive from Phnom Penh). Personally I prefer Siem Reap because it’s more of a tourist attraction and the life in town is pretty good especially at night. I even thought of opening a food business there. It seems that a lot of foreigners are doing that there and even marrying a local at the end of the day. I’m not saying I’m gonna end up like that :p

Below are some pictures from Cambodia.

[updated] Rano says the year started quite smoothly and I took my sweet time recovering from my already ten-days cough though it’s better than before. I still have work pending and now my focus will be the upcoming Brunei Cyber Games III which will be held next week from 8th to 11th January 2009. The difference of this tournament as compared with previous BCGs is that this will be the first time that PS3 games will be introduced with games such as Pro Evo Soccer 2009, RockBand and Call of Duty 4. But not to worry for PS2 gamers as Pro Evo Soccer 2009 is also available.

And yes, there will be trophies for the top three winners and there will also be a best dress band competition for the finalists of RockBand. As for the songs, it will be pre-selected by the committee and one of the songs that is confirmed so far is Creep by Radiohead. The settings for RockBand will be medium all the way and the finale will be unique as the finalists will be facing the audience on the stage.

As for PES 2009, only the World Cup category will be available and there won’t be any knockout and multi-tap category due to time constraint. Defending champion of the 2nd BCG for PES 2008 Alif Akmal will defend his title but PES 2009 is a different ball game now. So it’s surely anybody’s game and I played the game myself and it found unpredictable.

Below are the list of prizes which are 90% confirmed.

1) PES 2009 (PS2 category) = First prize is PS3 80Gig
2) PES 2009 (PS3 category) = First prize is PS3 160Gig
3) Call of Duty 4 (PS3) = First prize is $300 voucher at ETA Gameshop @ Cineplex
4) RockBand (PS3) = First Prize is Rockband 2 set.

I will be updating more details soon and sorry to PC Gamers as the committee has decided not to include the PC Games due to unforeseen circumstances. Those who want to inquire more, you can email me at ranoadidas @gmail.com

The year of the unexpected? Will 2009 fly as fast at 2008? Last year just went so fast and this year won’t be any different. I suppose the busier you are, the more likely that time will fly quickly. I already have a few things to run in January so that will keep me on my toes.

I still haven’t touch on my business plan (competition) and the BCG III will be taking most of my time next week. My family is still in the UK and some are under the weather. I hope you guys get well soon and don’t forget to me buy some Adidas stuff ;)

MNC launched Gelek. One of the local group MNC launched their mini-album Gelek last week at Aroidee Restaurant, Tanjung Bunut. Present was the Director of Brunei Tourism, Sheikh Jamaluddin and the host was DJ Zayn. The event was organised by Gigie, MNC’s manager and Catts Promotion & Services. Congratulations on the launch and for those who are interested to buy the CD, it’s available at Aroidee Restaurant or you can call 861 2350.

Nissin flash now available. For camera enthusiasts, you might be interested in investing a third party flash (for Canon and Nikon). There’s the Nissin Di622 or the Nissin Di466 flash for you to choose from. The prices are pretty affordable and cheaper compared to Nikon and Canon ones. This can be ideal for those who wants a backup flash or for those with low-medium budget on photography.

Rano says a Happy New Year to my readers of Ranoadidas and thanks once again for your continuous support. Last year, RA recorded a big milestone of 1.5 million visits which was twice the improvement from year 2007. So I’m not too sure what to expect for this year. As I said before, I’m ready for any challenges and I have to set any goals or objectives just yet. Perhaps being spontaneous and using my instincts can open new doors.

I know I have my Brunei Cyber Game III coming up as well as unfinished business plan for the Think Big Business Plan competition. Man, I already have a lot of work in my hands and today, I’m just feeling pure lazy.. It’s almost 4pm and I’m still lazing in bed..

As for last night, I avoided crowded places and spent some time with the RA6 at Andre’s crib for some BBQ gathering. I didn’t go to The Empire Hotel where they had the Mamma Mia theme celebration. Instead I’ve sent my representative to cover for me and below are the pictures taken from last night’s event.

Sorry for not posting much news today.. I’m still recovering from my cough and now I have a cold which is slowing me down at times.

Want good alignment services? I have had this done a few times at Sin Hup Huat Co. and they have the best alignment equipment (which costs a bomb) and they also have experienced alignment men for the job who has been with the company for more than 20 years.

Why is wheel alignment important to us? Because it will affect the wear and the tear conditions apart from giving customers a better petrol mileage, improved handling and of course, providing a safer driving experience. SHHC’s objective is to “Keep You Safe on the Roads”.
